Need some mental stimulation without chemicals and caffeine? Snacking on foods high in boron can keep your mind running at full throttle. In a study at the Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center in North Dakota, participants deprived of the mineral for nine weeks performed poorly on mental tasks such as counting and computer exercises. "Boron stimulates the production of the brain's beta waves, which work to keep your mind focused and alert," explains lead researcher James Penland, Ph.D.. To ward off afternoon mental slumps, snack on boron-rich red grapes or nuts.
